Jalopy Jamboree
The Alter Boys anti billet show , The Jalopy Jamboree got underway at 3:00 PM Saturday , although I understand most people arrived before 2:00.
I arrived with my roadster close to 4:00 and Johnny and Cousin Vinny were about a half hour behind me.
I was immediately flattered upon my arrival when Chuck Vranas of Street Rodder Magazine asked me to pull my car out of line. I thought ," Wow , he must want to photograph it for his magazine."
NOT !!!!
He wanted it moved so he could photograph the chopped and ghost flamed '55 Merc hardtop parked to my left.
I secretly hoped he'd slip and fall in all the spilled oil and antifreeze my car left in his pathway.
The first thing I took in were the people. Hundreds and hundreds of them. They swelled to over a thousand, it seemed by nightfall.
They traveled from Quebec,New York City, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, a huge group from central Maine who left before nightfall to travel safely, and an enormous group of Massachusetts rodders.
What a people watching show!
Bright red lipstick, pageboy haircuts, lunch box style purses, bullet bras, pleated long dresses and wild foot wear ruled the look of the ladies. The guys and gals had hundreds of tattoos to show off as well. Gallons of hair goo, trucker's wallets with chains, cuffed dungarees, black T shirts, bowling shirts, saddle shoes and western boots, and huge studded leather belt seemed to be the standard wear for the guys. This was more a people show than a car show.
The rides were totally mind blowing too. The right coast really has their act together on the rockabilly scene.
I saw them bounce out 3 totally stock cars and trucks that didn't fit the theme. They did allow a few cars in that were heavily billitized under the hood but like they said, they needed the money early into the show when they didn't think many people would show up. They should have kept their hoods shut to protect the guilty.
The hot rods and customs, for the most part, were raw, rough, home grown and highly interesting. Some customs were really works of art, like the chopped Merc I polluted with my petroleum by products that I tinkled all around it.
The bands were what most people came to hear.John Funky was the lead off D.J. for the first three hours. He can usually be heard on 88.10 FM every Saturday morning playing his Backwoods Radio Show down in Cambridge. The guy is tops on my list of weekend radio. The bands totally blew us away. It was a combination of Rockabilly, Psychobilly and Punk Rockabilly. If you could hear some of the songs on tape or CD, and not in person you would probably be very critical of it. To see these band perform in person is something else all together. You couldn't possibly believe the energy and stamina they posses until you've witnessed them yourself. They beat their instruments unmercifully. The bass player's hands had to be bleeding at the end of there sets! I saw one guy balanced on the side of his bass and hammering the crap out of it at the same time with long hair and sweat going in every direction. It didn't even look humanly possible to keep up that stride for an hour long set. These cats, Vinny thinks, might be chemically enhanced. I like to think of them as all being very talented.
It was great seeing all the clubs there. The hosts, The Alter Boys, The Rumblers from NYC and the Road Agents from Conn. and other friends from all around the North East. Congratulations also to Jon Bradstreet on his newly created position in the art world. It couldn't happen to a more deserving and great guy. Jonathan, now get going on your rod again!!!
By 11:00 PM they were just beginning to really warm up and the three of us were all wound down and tired. It sucks to be 55 and not 25. We all left feeling kind of old, but we all felt young again for a few hours earlier. It was like going back to a high school dance again, but not getting yelled at by your parents when you come screeching home in your hot rod drunk and done in by the hot music and wicked rides.
Congratulations to the Alter Boys for a great show they put on. The theme was right-on, the rides awesome, the people were phenomenal, and the music was astounding !!
Pictures to follow soon.
